In Bali, the sound of the gamelan orchestra vibrates everywhere. But for hundreds of years, music has been an activity exclusively for the men in the community and only in the last quarter of a century have women been able to play music in groups. One of the earliest of these was Luh Luwih, formed in 1981 by successful jewellery maker and dancer, Suarti, to promote women in the arts in Bali. Maria Bakkalapulo talks to members of Luh Luwih and looks at how women's gamelan groups have evolved in Bali over the last two decades.
